Recensie CD Andy Tielman en Tjendol Sunrise: 21st Century Rock

Met deze CD wordt maar weer eens bewezen dat jonge en minder jonge musici best samen kunnen werken mits het (muzikale) respect voor beide generaties maar overeind blijft staan. En je kunt horen aan het enthousiasme en plezier van de heren muzikanten, de interactie tussen Andy en hen dat men elkaar goed heeft zitten opzwepen en daardoor tot grote muzikale hoogten is gestegen. Bovendien groovet en rockt het geweldig, zit er een goed (soms bijna up) tempo in - door de jonge leeftijd misschien - en swingt het de pan uit.

Verwacht geen pure Indorock zoals destijds eind jaren vijftig, begin jaren zestig werd gebracht door de Indobands in met name Duitsland.

Het is namelijk meer dan dat: Indorock gemixt met jazz, doo-wop, rock-a-billy en ga zo maar door. Een ware samensmelting van diverse stijlen (fusion) die in deze context nog niet eerder op een audiodrager werd gepresenteerd en uitgebracht.

Luister maar eens naar de invloeden van Les Paul (het puike sologitaar- en samenspel van de gitaristen), de akkoordenschema’s (met veel seksten en dimakkoorden), de harmonische wendingen, de koortjes - soms hoor je de Beach Boys voorbijkomen - de echo-afstellingen, de gitaarinvloeden van  Javalins en Tielman Brothers en de plaats die de contrabas inneemt. Klinkt toch anders dan de basgitaar en doet denken aan de Imperial periode van de Tielman Brothers.

Kortom; er is veel plaats ingeruimd voor vernieuwingen. Toch is het zo dat als je teruggaat in de muziekgeschiedenis ook hier alles weer terugkomt – l’histoire se repète - zij het in een nieuw jasje gestoken en dat de muziek met veel overgave en elan wordt gespeeld. Aan ieder nummer apart aandacht schenken is niet nodig. Het is gewoon een compleet album geworden tot  in de kleinste details. Ook de arrangementen zijn weloverwogen gemaakt en gekozen.     

Saillant detail is  dat de stem van Andy zo fris, dynamisch en welhaast jong klinkt dat je bijna zou gaan denken dat men dit via technische wegen heeft bewerkstelligd. Hoe dan ook, een bewijs daarvoor dat bij live optredens van Andy een goede PA afstelling nodig is wil zijn stem voor 100% tot zijn recht komen. En ook voor Andy geldt: respect dat hij vandaag de dag dit niveau nog haalt! Of het nu om snelle rockstukken gaat of ballads: hij doet het hem toch maar. Daarbij gesteund door de heren van Tjendol Sunrise waardoor de basis van deze CD staat als een huis. En daar kun je lekker op steunen. Dat de jeugd van Tjendol Sunrise zich heeft verdiept in de de manier van spelen van destijds pleit alleen maar voor haar (muzikale) instelling, belangstelling, technisch kunnen en affiniteit. Ook de drummer laat zich niet onbetuigd. Soms denk je dat je LouLou Tielman hoort. 1 nummer wil ik tenslotte toch wel speciaal vermelden: I can’t forget you. Luister zelf maar waarom. Het bestaat uit 2 delen. Nog steeds dezelfde sololick. Tijdloos. Emotie!

Is er dan geen enkel puntje van kritiek? Als u de CD koopt (doen!) dan mag u dit zelf beoordelen. Over smaak valt immers niet te twisten. Tenslotte: ook aan de layout is tot in details gedacht: Andy speelt niet op een Jazzmaster maar……………Tielmaster. Leuke woordspeling.

It has been 50 years since the first single of the Tielman Brothers came out, and that made the brothers Andy, Reggy, Ponthon and Loulou true groundbreakers for Dutch-Indonesian rock 'n' roll music, mostly reffered to as "Indorock". And for many decades my favorite Tielman Brothers 45 "Record Hop" b/w "Swing It Up" (1959) has been sitting in livingroom jukebox. Scratchy from the many plays, but still an all time favorite and a memory of the rock 'n' roll explosion in The Netherlands in the late 50s and early 60s.

Andy Tielman is now 72 years old and he's still performing and recording. After some legendary performances with the fabulous Tjendol Sunrise, this was the perfect opportunity to celebrate 50 years of rock 'n' roll by releasing a historical CD. In the early 60s the Tielman Brothers recorded a song titled "18th Century Rock", arranged by Andy from a classical piece by Mozart, and so they came up with a perfect title for the new CD "21st Century Rock". So, what's on it? A staggering 17 tracks ranging from rock 'n' roll to indorock to acapella ballads! Let's give it a spin...

Andy is introduced by the band on track one with a tune written by Andy and Patrick, with a humerous wink to the old Batman TV series and a song called "Let's Twist Again" by Chubby Checker, FUN. Straight after the introduction, Andy sets in his legendary "Rock Little Baby Of Mine", and 72 years of age or not, this old geaser still can rock your socks off. Next is "I Can't Forget You". Acapella and doo-wop style ballads are not my cup-of-tea, so I'll skip a few songs in this review, but that doesn't mean they aren't any good, on the contrary, everything about this album is great, I just like the faster songs better. Like "Rosaleena", a rocker based on Conway Twitty's "Danny Boy", and a fabulous new rendition of "18th Century Rock", which captures the true spirit of Indorock music. And then rockin' onward with a rockabilly beat on the slapping bass with "Hello Catharina" and "Nice Guy", followed by an all new recording of my jukebox favorite "Record Hop". Isn't it just great that all those superb songs from the heydays of rock 'n' roll can now be heard again by a whole new generation!

The cool Indorock style instrumental "The Carioca" is followed by yet anther classic "Swing It Up". A guitar version of Glenn Miller's old timer "In The Mood", made famous in The Netherlands by Rene & His Alligators, swings through my livingroom with a thumping double bass beat. "Who's That Man?" is a song I haven't heard before, it stands out because of the heavier rock guitar and was inspired by Gene Kelly's "Singin' In The Rain" from the 1952 movie with the same title.

"Andy's rock" is another great rocking instrumental, and the last track on this CD is a so-called bonus track, an acapella version of "I Can't Forget You". A superb album which brings back great memories and a true celebration of 50 years of rock 'n' roll in Holland, which would have never been the same without Andy Tielman!

En dan de klapper, Andy Tielman heeft een meesterwerk afgeleverd met zijn nieuwste CD "21th Century Rock". Oude nummers in een gloednieuw jasje zijn opgenomen met de band Tjendol Sunrise. Het plezier straalt er vanaf. Jazz, Rockabilly en Indo-Rock wisselen elkaar af, Andy op zijn best. Tevens een telefonisch onderhoud met een lid van Tjendol Sunrise, waarin zeker de vraag gesteld zal worden "Willen jullie naar de studio komen ?". En dan kan het zomaar zijn dat Andy Tielman meekomt. Mimpi Sedih. Maar soms komen dromen uit.
